Learning Objectives:
In this session, teens learn about resources in their community that prevent crime and help victims. The group will identify and locate a variety of programs and services. Teens can then use what they have learned to design group crime prevention projects and to call on these community resources for help.
 Tips to Enhance Session 6:
 Web Resources:
 Community Resource People:
  • Victim assistance counselor: Can provide information on how and why teens should contact victim assistance providers.
  • Paramedic: Can give information about local hospitals and other local emergency services and resources.
Remember to give the community resource person the session materials at least one week before he or she will participate in your class.
 Service-Learning Project Ideas:
  • Short Project: Students can hold bake sales to raise money for a victim service organization that needs donations of money and supplies.
  • Medium-Length Project: Students can produce a directory of victim service providers and emergency contact numbers. They should also photocopy and distribute booklets to classmates and friends. Students can also ask school administrators if the resource can be made available on the school’s website, or if they can be mass-produced and given to every student at the school.
  • Long Project: Students can conduct a survey of schoolmates to determine their knowledge of local victim assistance resources. Based on their findings, students can invite a victim service provider to speak at a school assembly focused on victim assistance, victim’s rights, and how and why teens should seek help.
