Learning Objectives:
This session helps teens learn how to work together as a group. Teens will discuss the kinds of treatment they want from each other in order to establish their own guidelines for working together. They will create a group vision for a safe community and learn what to expect from the Community Works program. They will also have the opportunity to tell you about their interests.
Tips to Enhance Session 1:

Because this is your first Community Works session, follow Step A and conduct an icebreaker. (Check out Community Works pages 31-35 for examples of icebreakers and directions to conduct them.) Icebreakers can help create a safe and comfortable learning environment. Icebreakers also warm up a group and help them focus on the activities and issues that you are planning to present.

Administer the Community Works pretest (PDF) to gauge the students’ knowledge of safety, crime prevention, and civic engagement.
Community Resource People:-
Community Leader: Has first-hand experience integrating the session topics "safety" and "community."
Remember to give the community resource person (CRP) the session materials at lest one week before he or she participates in your class. Let the CRP know that you would like him or her to discuss how individuals can work together as a community while maintaining a safe and understanding environment.
Service-Learning Project ideas:Take a few minutes to introduce teens to service-learning. Encourage them to brainstorm project ideas to correspond with future lessons. (Remember to give them the Sneak Preview handout.)
