Learning Objectives:

In this session, teens will learn how to protect themselves from robbery and assault. They will use what they already know and add practical new information to develop a variety of prevention strategies.

 Tips to Enhance Session 12:
  • Engage students in discussion focused on street crimes in their community (to supplement Steps B, C, and F). You can use the following discussion questions:
    1.      What kinds of street crime are a problem in your community?
    2.      What is the best defense against street crime?
    3.      If you were walking down the street at night and thought someone was following you, what would you do?
  • NCPC has a free, downloadable brochure (PDF) to remind teens to be streetwise.
 Web Resources:
 Community Resource People:
  • Local newscaster: Can provide information on how to create an effective and articulate PSA during Step D.
Remember to give the community resource person the session materials at least one week before he or she will participate in your class.

 Service-Learning Project Ideas:
  • Short Project: Students should video/audiotape the PSA they created in Step D, and play it during the school’s morning announcements or during the local news.
  • Medium-Length Project: Students can create their own monthly newsletter or tip sheet to distribute to peers and neighbors about street safety, and robbery and assault prevention.
  • Long Project: Students can raise money/materials needed to create a billboard in a high-traffic, local area. The billboard could include a teen assault statistic, a prevention tip, and contact information for a victim to use if they need help.
