Objective
- To learn the meanings of various signs for pedestrians, cyclists, and in-line skaters.
Duration
30 minutes
Materials
Pictures of traffic signs enlarged on a photocopying machine from the Being Safe With Signs (PDF) worksheet.
Preparation
Enlarge pictures of signs, photocopy worksheet for each member of the group.
Activity
- Discuss how traffic laws for cyclists also apply to in-line skaters.
- Hold up each of the traffic signs and discuss the meanings for pedestrians, cyclists, and skaters.
- Arrange the chairs or desks in rows to simulate intersecting roads. If chairs or desks are not available, use masking tape on the floor to make "streets."
- Have a volunteer pretend to be on the road. Have other volunteers scattered throughout the "streets" holding up various traffic signs. When the child comes to the end of a street, he or she must tell what the sign means, and if correct, turn down another street.
- Continue until the volunteer has approached all of the signs.
- Do the activity again with a volunteer acting as a cyclist. Briefly discuss any differences between pedestrian and cyclist reactions to traffic signs.
- Have children complete the Being Safe With Signs (PDF) worksheet as a review of sign meanings. Take the Bike Safety Quiz (PDF) as a review.
