Sgt. Kern A. Swoboda is a 19-year veteran with the New York State Police. He has been actively involved with the agency’s crime prevention programs for more than 16 years, starting with the inception of the New York State Police’s Safe Schools Program in 1992.

He worked five years as the crime prevention officer and assistant emergency management officer for the Executive Services Detail at the State Capitol. There, he was responsible for providing security assessments, crime prevention programs, and coordinating law enforcement and security for large scale events and demonstrations.

In the course of his tenure, Sgt. Swoboda developed a comprehensive workplace violence prevention program that was presented to many public and private sector organizations and businesses. He has worked extensively with many New York state agencies including the Office of General Services, Department of Labor, Department of Tax and Finance, Department of Transportation, Department of Health, State Education Department, Department of Correctional Services, and Office of the State Comptroller.

Sgt. Swoboda is currently assigned to the division’s Public Information Office as the assistant director of public information. His current responsibilities include media relations, release of public information, production coordination, and director of crime prevention programs. He has worked with teams of state police personnel in the development the agency’s crime prevention section of the agency’s website and in the development and implementation of an online newsroom. The online newsroom was developed to allow registered media access to press releases, agency fact sheets, daily arrest/incident summaries, and to receive real-time news updates from the agency.

Sgt. Swoboda is also a long-term member of the New York State Crime Prevention Coalition, currently serving as the secretary on the executive board. He has also represented New York State at the National Crime Prevention Coalition Leadership Forums, and has been a participant in the National Crime Prevention Council Peer-to-Peer Technical Assistance Program, before joining the National Crime Prevention Association board of directors.
