City, State: New Castle County Delaware, DE
Intended audience(s):
Business owners, Children, Community volunteers, Homeowner or neighborhood associations, K-12 school faculty or administrators, Members of civic organizations, Parents, Teens, Watch groups (Block, Neighborhood, Business)

The Red Clay School District Public Safety Office, along with partners the New Castle County Police and the Delaware State Police, use October and November to highlight community groups and school volunteer groups who have a positive effect on child safety in the communities of our District.  This initiative presents crime prevention assemblies in schools as well as volunteer recognition activities such as receptions in the evening at some of our neighborhood schools.  The background of the initiative stems from the belief that neighborhood schools are a center in any community.  Schools are sources of pride in a community and the Safe Schools Project allows us to provide neighborhood watches with training in recognizing child predators, how to be watchful of students walking to and from school and being attentive to crime prevention issues in their community.  Another positive outcome of this initative has been the partnership between the New Castle County Police and the District in creating an anonymous tip line for school safety issues, such as weapons and drugs in school.  This partnership allows a citizen to contact our tip line for either a community or school threat and the tips are shared between both agencies.
