Basic CPTED Workshop Description
Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) is based on the principle that proper design and effective use of buildings and public spaces in neighborhoods can lead to a reduction in the fear and incidence of crime, and an improvement in the quality of life for citizens.

Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) is based on the principle that proper design and effective use of buildings and public spaces in neighborhoods can lead to a reduction in the fear and incidence of crime, and an improvement in the quality of life for citizens. Learn how to assess conditions in your neighborhood and apply practical access control (doors, fences), surveillance (lighting, windows, landscaping), territorial reinforcement (signs, sidewalks, ordinances), and maintenance (code enforcement, community clean ups) to improve your community, your neighborhood, and/or your home.
TRAINING GOAL
The primary goal of the CPTED training is to provide individuals and organizations involved in community crime prevention programs with instruction and information that will allow them to develop and implement a significant CPTED initiative in their home communities. Participants will learn to implement CPTED principles, foster relationships with partners, and acquire the skills and abilities required to reduce crime in a variety of settings and situations.
OBJECTIVES
Upon completion of this training, participants can be expected to
1. Understand how to evaluate neighborhood activities and understand how they may contribute to or inhibit crime
2. Define CPTED and describe its historical development
3. Recognize the fundamental principles of CPTED and articulate strategies that support each principle
4. Assess the physical environment of sites or neighborhoods using a formal CPTED survey
5. Understand the functions of a variety of security devices, lighting techniques, and landscaping
6. Understand the meaning, role, and importance of maintenance in CPTED
7. Identify laws, regulations, and policies that support CPTED and articulate strategies for developing new ones.
8. Demonstrate successful application of CPTED in a variety of settings.
9. Identify and communicate with community planners and advisory groups regarding the creation of a comprehensive planning tool to address crime before it occurs
10. Possess the skills and abilities necessary to develop and implement a CPTED initiative
