Celebrate Safe Communities Presents New Video Vignettes!
The four new Celebrate Safe Communities video vignettes are great resources for a variety of crime-prevention themed meetings, safety events, and trainings. They feature Ann Harkins, President and CEO of the National Crime Prevention Council, Sgt. Steve Parker (retired) of the Des Moines County Sheriff’s Office, Carmen Caldwell, Executive Director of the Citizens’ Crime Watch of Miami-Dade and NCPA board member, and Denise O’Donnell, Director of the Bureau of Justice Assistance, U.S. Department of Justice.
Video Clip: “Help Keep Your Community Safe”

The “Help Keep Your Community Safe” video clip is a great introductory video to the Celebrate Safe Communities initiative. Ms. Harkins describes the Celebrate Safe Communities initiative as crime prevention done the right way – local people working with local law enforcement to address local issues. She advises on how community members can register their own events to help “Take A Bite Out Of Crime®” in their neighborhoods.
The simple crime prevention steps introduced in this clip are user friendly and would be an excellent addition to Neighborhood Watch meetings, safety events, and as talking points for safety-oriented conferences and seminars.

The “Getting Involved in Neighborhood Safety” video clip is an excellent introductory tutorial in how community members can work with law enforcement to keep neighborhoods safe. Sgt. Parker has portrayed McGruff the Crime Dog® for nearly 30 years and is an advocate for community safety. He believes that all community members should “watch out and help out.” In working with law enforcement, crime goes down and communities become safer and more vibrant.
The tips provided in this video clip would be a great addition to Citizen Police Academy trainings, Neighborhood Watch meetings, and safety events.

The “Start a Neighborhood Watch” video clip is a beginner-level tutorial on what Neighborhood Watch programs are all about. Ms. Caldwell describes Neighborhood Watch as a program that asks neighbors to watch out for each other’s homes and work together to solve crime problems. Since 1972, Neighborhood Watch programs have helped citizens create safer communities.
The starter tips provided in this video clip would be excellent for a community meeting. Ms. Caldwell’s tips can help communities begin a Neighborhood Watch program of their own.

She emphasizes the importance of community–law enforcement relationships and community member involvement. Crime prevention is more than security; it is also about tailoring solutions to your local community needs and conditions.
