Shepherd Park Terrace Civic Club celebrates National Night Out on October 5, 2010.  This is the date assigned to Texas.  Our event takes place in our community on a vacant lot from 5:00 pm - 9 pm.  National, state and local politicians are invited.  The Houston Police Department, the Houston firefighters and many local businesses attend also. Some of the games we play to help neighbors know one another are Neighborhood Bingo (street addresses are used, names of neighbors, civic club president, etc.).  Our local light company attends and provides information and packets for preserving energy.  We have presentations from  a karate school for the young people. We also have a dis jocket and have our neighbors do line dancing.  As our politicians show up they are allowed to make speeches.  We eat hot dogs, popcorn and snowcones.  Besides neighbors sharing stories and getting to know one another, we also get tips on safety in our community.  Finally, we make presentations to the oldest neighbor, the youngest, longest living in our community and the newest to the community.
