Parents and communities can help prevent child abduction by educating children and themselves.
Child abduction is a crime that parents can help prevent by educating their children and themselves. Our children's website, McGruff.org, provides kid-friendly information through advice on Staying Home Alone and Strangers and Other Dangers.
NCPC works with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) to spread these messages of crime prevention and safety.
Preventing Child Abduction: More than Stranger Safety
Although most parents teach their children not to talk to strangers, the reality is that not all strangers are dangerous and not all known adults are safe. The vast majority of children who are abducted are taken by non-custodial parents and family acquaintances. (This is inferred from the National Incidence Studies of Missing, Abducted, Runaway and Throwaway Children (NISMART) research project's study, NISMART-2. Teach children to always check with a parent before going anywhere with anyone.
