Aug 30, 2010 A Crime Prevented Is Much More Valuable Than A Crime Prosecuted
The recent conference at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice focused on addressing national trends in prosecution, crime prevention, and criminal justice strategies. Among the Opening Day speakers was Cyrus Vance, the New York County District Attorney (DA), who set the tone for the conference with his thesis “a crime prevented is much more valuable than a crime prosecuted.”
Aug 25, 2010 Lock Up Your Things-Everywhere
Recently at my gym there have been a number of things stolen—wallets, IPods, purses, laptops, etc. It got me thinking that a lot of us tend to always give people the benefit of the doubt and normally don’t think of the worst case scenarios. Honestly, wouldn’t you rather assume that your things will remain safely in your locker throughout your workout than to worry about them being stolen? The reality is, at least for now, that locking your things up is the safest bet.
Aug 16, 2010 Celebrate Your Safe Community
There is still time to register your Crime Prevention Month activities to receive free resources for your event from our national Celebrate Safe Communities (CSC) Initiative. CSC was launched in 2008 by the National Crime Prevention Council, in partnership with the National Sheriff’s Association, and the Bureau of Justice Assistance.
Jul 19, 2010 Girls and Gangs: The Hidden Risks of Dating a Gang Member
Many teenage girls are attracted to what society calls a “bad boy,” finding this image and lifestyle exciting. This attraction can sometimes lead to a girl dating a person who may be involved with a gang. Our society often glamorizes this lifestyle in movies, television shows, and music videos. Mass media has a way of conveying a message that makes this way of life attractive which can entice a young girl’s desire to date a gang member for all of the wrong reasons. However, some girls may not fully understand the repercussions of this decision and how this association can affect their lives.
Jul 12, 2010 Digital Copier Indentity Theft
In our office we have a copier that can make your copy into a PDF document that you can receive via email at your desk. It’s a really great feature but recently I saw how that feature could turn potentially ugly with the push of a few wrong buttons.
Jul 01, 2010 Happy 30th Birthday, McGruff!
In the seventies America was perceived to be in a malaise where nothing worked and nothing could be done about it. We had just had our future rewritten due to the oil embargo; “stagflation” was a word on every pundit’s lips, and nothing seemed to be able to be done about our social issues, especially crime
Jun 29, 2010 The Telephone Game
Do you remember the “Telephone Game”? It’s the game that many of us used to play as children. You would whisper a message into someone’s ear and they would turn and whisper it to the person on the other side of them. By the time the message made it down the line, it had been distorted so much that you hardly knew what the original message was. Those telephone games were funny. Today’s, are much more serious.
Jun 01, 2010 Make Your Car Unappealing to Thieves
Recently someone broke into my car. When it happened I couldn’t believe it. It actually took me by surprise because I live in a secured complex and park in a garage where I felt both my car and I were very safe and secure. Unfortunately, someone (or several people) figured out how to break through that secure area despite the complex’s best efforts.
Mar 16, 2010 Anti-Bullying Programs Are Working
There seems to be a program for nearly everything these days. As we continue to develop programs for schools, community centers, and youth-focused organizations, we stop and wonder if any of these programs are actually working. A new research study funded by the Department of Justice conducted research on anti-bullying programs in schools to see if they are, in fact, having a positive effect on youth.
Mar 02, 2010 Don’t just be Bystander – Start an Activity or Program
There are many neighborhoods across the country that are plagued with gun and gang violence. One of the reasons children may decide to get involved with gangs and other deviant behavior is because of a lack of support in the home.Another reason could be a lack of positive activities for them to engage in in the community. The economy and constant budget tightening have affected many localities and organizations alike.Sometimes, all it takes is a creative mind from an average and caring person to start an activity or program for it to blossom and make a positive impact in the community.
Feb 18, 2010 With Valentine's Day Approaching, Be Safe - Online
Social networking sites have become vastly accepted in today’s generation, leaving traditional networking in the dust for many young people. Social networking sites have been accepted into today’s culture not only because of America’s ever changing innovations in technology but, for their convenience as well. America’s youth have access to these networking sites at their finger tips, literally, with iphones, blackberry’s and other forms of hand held gadgets. According to Brian Solis.com, a site that tracks statistics on young people and their usage of social networking sites, determined that nearly 80,000 young Americans use and maintain a profile on popular sites such as Face book and MySpace. I believe that it is safe to say with St. Valentine’s Day quickly approaching these social networking sites are going to be thriving with young American’s looking for someone to share the special day with.
Feb 01, 2010 Let’s talk safety . . . everyday
The news of VA Tech student Morgan Harrington’s remains being found last week hit me profoundly on a personal level. You will recall that Morgan Harrington went missing Oct. 13 after she attended a Metallica concert in Charlottesville with friends and wound up outside of the arena without her ticket or car keys. She called her friends and said she would find her own way home - that was the last anyone heard from her.
Jan 25, 2010 Donate, but Be Careful
As rescue groups travel from all over the world to assist the Haitian people they need more than just physical help. Organizations like the Red Cross and World Health Organization are in dire need of financial support from people across the world. As terrible as it sounds, many people take advantage of disasters like this to make money themselves. Don’t be fooled when you are donating money; make sure your contributions are going to reputable organizations. These scams have been prevalent in past catastrophes such as Hurricane Katrina and the 2004 Asian Tsunami.
Jan 14, 2010 Be WARY of WORK AT HOME Scammers
With the downturn in the economy, increased unemployment, and people facing foreclosures on their homes, “Work at Home” scams are returning to the forefront.Letters in the mail or emails promise big pay for work that is done in the comfort of your own home. They direct you to call or visit sites to register to work.Once you’ve registered, the scammers have all of your personal details, such as your address, email, phone number, social security number, etc. Some sites require that you pay a fee to register with them, so instead of stealing your identity, they just steal your money.
Jan 05, 2010 How Can You Make the New Year Safer?
As each new year rolls around, we are inclined to make a “new year’s resolution,” and decide that this is the year that we will actually stick with it. Resolutions normally consist of weight loss goals, exercising, eating healthier, or quitting bad habits such as smoking or drinking. While these resolutions are certainly important, why not make a second resolution, one that not only impacts you, but your family, work place and community? This year, do something different. Make a resolution not only with yourself, but with others to practice crime prevention and personal safety in your community.

Nov 17, 2009 The Best Bang for the Surveillance Camera Buck
Researchers at the Urban Institute are taking a hard look at law enforcement’s use of surveillance cameras. In a study to be released at the end of the year, researchers are looking at three cities’ use of the cameras. In Baltimore, MD, the recent conviction of a woman accused of assault and handgun violations was achieved, in large measure, through the valuable footage provided by police surveillance cameras.
Nov 03, 2009 On Social Networks, Private Information Can Become Public Fast
As social networking tools have gone mainstream, they’ve incorporated sophisticated privacy settings that allow users to control exactly who can see their photos and other data. It is important to make use of these features to protect yourself. Unfortunately, the same features may also be providing a false sense of security.
