Federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies joined together in 2011 to form the Distressed Homeowner initiative and work to eliminate mortgage fraud schemes plaguing the country. Loan modification scams run rampant at a time when many distressed homeowners are in search of alternatives out of an overwhelming mortgage loan. Within a year, the Distressed Homeowner initiative found fraudulent loans impacting over 73,000 victims and totaling $1 billion worth of losses.
